A journey with Lou Zeldis

When I was on my way to meet the jewelerymaker Lou Zeldis, I didn’t know what to expect. Somebody had said he was very interesting looking. On the phone I only heard a voice with an accent I couldn’t quite determine, but we set up a meeting for one sunny January day in Santa Monica. Lou looked nothing like I had expected, and he was just the greatest and most interesting person to be around.
He grew up all around the world, from Santa Monica to Japan and spent a lot of time in Bali, his heart home.

We finished the interview at the time and I didn’t come to talk to Lou for another 6 months. And that was for bad news. Shortly after our meeting he had seen a doctor who had determined he had lungcancer. He was in the middle of celltreatments, but it was looking up.
We made plans to meet 2 months later to photograph him in his new state, well on his way to recovery. This is how he looked then.

Here he is, telling me about cutting his hair like Siddhartha.

He was doing great, and was mostly fascinated by how he’d lost his eyelashes and the tears would run. We emailed again a little bit ago, we were planning on re-visiting this and photographing him as his hair grew out. But today I received news he has passed. It makes me so incredibly sad, but I’m so glad I got to meet him.

This is a clip I took out of my archives where we’re talking about the culture of death in Western culture as opposed to Bali.

Los Angeles travel story – Now in Elle!

A little bit ago I had the fantastic fun time of getting to show Hermine Coyet Ohlen, the Editor-in-Chief of Elle Sweden, around my favorite places in L.A. We skipped the tourist-traps and went straight for the gems I’ve gotten to love through living here for 10 years.

Oh, and the model on the cover is Alice Herbst, the winner of Top Model Sweden. I shot backstage for Elle on Top Model here in Los Angeles, so attached are two images of Alice. Many congrats to Alice and best of luck with the modeling!

My nanosecond in Antarctica

Going to Antarctica was one of the most mind-blowing, spiritual and incredible experiences I’ve had. To say I was high on life for 10 days would be an understatement. It’s been hard to describe it to people after coming back. One of the most overwhelming thoughts was “this is what this place has looked like for millions of years!” It’s one big cycle of generations of penguins, seals and whales, and they’re not scared, they just look at you with curiosity. It’s a time machine, to a time where innocence existed in the minds of animals towards humanity. It’s heartbreaking at the same time as you feel the elixir of life coursing through you and everything around you. To remember the small, small part of the universe we all are. It’s simply heaven on earth. Not returning at some point in my life seems unfathomable. The memory and the experience, a nanosecond in the universe, will stay with me forever.

Lauren Bradley – Femme Fatale

Lauren Bradley is cool. The minute you meet her she is kind, warm and likeable. Not in a cheesy way, in a completely genuine and just relaxed way. The fact that she’s been raiding great thrift stores for a decade makes her easy on the style-eyes, wearing eclectic and completely personal pieces like tiger patterned blouses and flowy pants. And she speaks openly about experiences, good and bad, she’s had in the past which always gets me because I love to hear about what people learn.

A few years ago she had a devastating breakup. One of those where things feel like they are going great, but blows up in your face on a street corner in San Francisco.

After this particular experience there was a pause. A pause to think and to consciously decide where her path was leading her next. Lauren was looking to re-claim what was her, what she treasured about herself; to find a new way to love and accept herself. She started making lingerie.

The Le Sang Bleu (blue blooded) catalogue is all her posing in her creations. They are beautiful, flattering pieces. Classy, but manages to remain sexy and intriguing. The images and the branding of Le Sang Bleu bring across Lauren as the femme fatale she is, but without looking for the artificiality and perceived perfection. It’s Lauren and her beautiful body and her acceptance of what it is – a modern woman who’s ended the constant self-hatred of this or that body part and done something great, inspiring, and sexy with what she’s got. Lauren Bradley is so cool!

The month of September I spent directing and producing a music video for the talented Elizaveta.
It was a crazy, crazy month, but so much fun and such and enriching experience. The final result is now public and the EP can be bought on Itunes.

I’m so thankful to the people that came and worked on this with me! Mark, Scott, Jamie, Tehra, the fantastic Lil Buck, Missy, Baptiste, awesome Joel, Dehx, Julie and many more. And of course to Elizaveta and Universal Republic for trusting in me to make it happen. These kinds of things are always a journey we make together, and I was so excited to do it with you.

We were very fortunate to be able to film at Julie and Tim’s Canyon Ranch. Julie’s also the one who took this picture, at the very end of the day, we’re all so happy to be done! Especially the freak in the air.
